“Clem” follows Melbourne musician, Clementine, during the recording of his debut album. Across ten days with collaborator Sammy Luka, the pair record and discuss each instrument and intention, diligently building upon each track.

Director’s Statement

Swift, energetic, and fundamentally DIY, “Clem” matches the ethos of the subject it captures. Armed with two cameras and an audio recorder, I shot the project solo, originally aiming to record as much of the studio sessions as humanly possible.

Yet after accumulating 3.5TB of footage and creating countless hour-long edits, I took a step back to consider what was important and what was dispensable. Instead of a chronological recount, the resulting film is largely a rapid cluster of brief sequences, designed to provide a taste of the process.

I placed a great emphasis on exhibiting the collaboration between musicians, Clementine and Sammy Luka, believing that this was the heart of the project. I applied an observational style and maintained the forth wall, instructing subjects not to interact with the camera. B-roll and clips of performances played a vital role, as I didn’t want to linger on a shot for more than five seconds.
